How to create a video resume that gets you interviews

A video resume is a short, self-recorded introduction — usually 60 to 90 seconds — that lets hiring managers hear your voice, see your energy, and understand why you're a fit. This guide walks through storytelling, technical setup, and communication tips so your video introduction actually helps you stand out.

Why record a video resume?

A written resume tells employers what you've done. A video resume shows them who you are.

1. Plan your story first

Before you press record, write a short script — aim for 60–90 seconds.

2. Set up lighting

Face a window during the day. Avoid sitting with a window behind you.

3. Get the audio right

Record in the quietest room you have. Use a lav mic or wired earbuds.

4. Frame the shot

Camera at eye level. Frame mid-chest up. Tidy background.

5. Communicate with confidence

Practice out loud. Smile at the start, slow down, pause between sentences.

6. Edit lightly and submit

Trim dead space, add captions, export 1080p MP4.
